Instructor work station and gear holder
This area was designed for 6th degree black belt Maurey Levitz of the New Paltz Karate Academy and the many instructors of the school to go over lesson plans, organize paper work, store some office supplies, and hold martial arts body gear. Framed out with 2x4s, this cabinetry was built to hold the custom made, extra-over-sized drawers. The top is 1.5" thick featuring white oak plywood with premium grade 3/4" pine trimming the front edge. The drawer faces, feature solid wood drawer pulls, and were made from 3/4" plywood with a seamless premium pine veneer and custom router edging.
A piece of premium pine was ripped down and glued back together to take the front curve of the top of the work station and finished with a routered edge.
Custom wooden drawer glides were made to hold each drawer with minimal play to glide easily and yet able to hold these extra deep, over-sized drawers perfectly when fully extended. The eyelet holes were made so the drawers could be carried out to the dojo floor when needed for annual testing for karate belt advancement.
Pine and bamboo is used throughout the dojo with white oak flooring. The work station/gear holder, seen in the background, features three coats of high gloss lacquer, and fits perfectly, with its custom designed rounded corners on the training floor.
